Because of safety and liability reasons, many companies decide it is necessary to have a drug free workplace. In order to do so, these companies utilize periodic announced drug tests, pre-employment drug tests, for cause drug tests and random employee drug tests. Some companies also utilize post-accident drug tests.

Periodic Announced Drug Tests

Periodic announced employee drug testing occurs when an employer announces that a drug test will be performed on a specific date at a specific time. In some cases, the employees have annual drug tests as part of a physical or evaluation. These drug tests are usually a stipulation of continued employment and may be noted in an employee manual. While some companies test all of the employees at a specific location all in one day, most companies schedule periodic announced drug tests around an employee’s anniversary with the company.
